As seen from its name, bio-based plastics are partially or completely made from renewable biomass such as starch, sucrose, fibers, or through microbial synthesis. The selling point of bio-based plastic is the degree of biomass concentration and the advantage of biomass being natural, sustainable material which makes it environmentally friendly. However, such statement does not take in consideration that being rapidly biodegradable.
Bio-based plastics stress the renewability of its ingredients while deemphasizing the aspect of decomposition. Currently, the focus of industry development and application of bio-based plastics are the replacement of traditional plastics in areas demanding high durability. Examples include: cases for electronic products, plastic components, automotive components, and beverage bottles.
